Middle school. PENNY, holding her schoolbooks, runs up to ETHAN.

PENNY

I know why you didn’t come to my birthday party last weekend.

ETHAN

Yeah. Sorry about that. My mom—

PENNY

Dropped off some cupcakes for me. My favorite kind. The kind we used to make together.

ETHAN

That’s so weird.

PENNY

I remembered Haley Dobson was having a party too.

ETHAN

Why would I—

PENNY

It’s okay. She’s cool. You should hang out with cool people. We’re starting high school next year and you… you’re gonna need cool friends there. At least, that’s what I hear.

ETHAN

Her brother has a fake ID.

PENNY

That’s cool.

ETHAN

Yeah.

PENNY

My piñata had tootsie rolls. I guess that doesn’t compare.

ETHAN

I have to get going.

PENNY

Oh. That’s cool.

ETHAN

Yeah. Jeff’s—

PENNY

I get it.

Ethan?

ETHAN

Yeah?

PENNY

You probably have plans for tomorrow.

ETHAN

Kind of.

PENNY

I don’t mind. You know. Haley and Jeff are cool.

ETHAN

They are.

PENNY

I’m sorry.

ETHAN

What?

PENNY

Nothing.

ETHAN

Penn—

PENNY

I’ll see you later. Get going. You have cool things to do.

ETHAN

Are you okay?

PENNY

Why would anything be wrong?

ETHAN

Are you mad at me?

PENNY

I will be if you keep talking to me and are late for your plans with Jeff.

ETHAN

Cool. See you later!

PENNY

ETHAN exits.
